Guitar Hero

20 12 2005

So I don’t know about in your circles, but in the group of people I spend time with, Guitar Hero has been ripping through our conversations and free time like wildfire. At NSI we played it at lunch today multiplayer (the game costs $80 with the guitar controller and there were three of them in the office today if that tells you anything) and again for a couple of hours during the office Christmas/Secret Santa party. The game combines a) the kind of brilliant thrill you get from being completely incompetent at music and yet wanting to play and b) hitting all the right cliche’s to make the topic funny and not stupid.

A Scanner Darkly

6 10 2005

Based on a Philip K. Dick story , Warner Independent Films’ version of A Scanner Darkly looks really awesome. I love movies that are different from the drivel that Hollywood usually spews out. Leave it to the independents of the world to really get creative.

Tivo

28 04 2005

I finally got a Series 2 Tivo yesterday after living without one since my roomates and I went our seperate ways. At the time I didn’t realize how much Tivo changes the way you watch TV. Nothing good on? Watch a Tivo’d show! Miss what was just said and don’t want to debate it with whomever is watching with you? Rewind 12 times and prove it! And now, the Series 2 boxes can be hooked up to your home network (I will be using a wireless USB network adapter) and show pictures, play MP3s, and even download shows onto a computer for burning to DVD or watching there. If you are crazy enough to own multiple TVs and Tivos I guess you can even watch any show recorded on any of those Tivos on any of the TVs. I’m not that crazy however. The Tivo developer’s website makes an SDK available to amateur developers as well which could prove interesting, although it says “At this time, HME applications can not control any of the TiVo DVRs scheduling, recording, or video playback capabilities.”

Charlie Murphy

We all know Charlie Murphy from Chappelle’s show, but how many of you know this Charlie Murphy? I thought so..

The End of Days

26 01 2004

Well, this story at CNN proves it; The world is coming to an end. I don’t even have anything more to say about it.

The Office

4 01 2004

I’ve been watching my roomate’s DVD set of a British comedy called The Office. It is absolutely hilarious. It is also the saddest commentary on work and life I’ve seen in a long time. It is perfectly British because of both of those things. Definitely check it out if you get the chance, you’ll quickly notice a lot of little things that could have been taken directly out of your own life and work. Unless you are perfectly happy, in which case, screw you.

The Last Samurai

7 12 2003

Just got back from seeing The Last Samurai at the Kabuki and I’m glad to say I liked it even more than I thought I would. It’s somewhere around 2.5 hours, but I easily lost myself in the story and visuals and kept hoping there was more to be seen. Some people who went with me had minor nit-picks about the fact that Tom Cruise was the star, or a few little details, but I know that everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. It is an interesting topic to think about given America’s current military engagements (war? police actions? what the hell are they anyways?) And I was very keen to see how people in the theatre reacted as well as what my own reactions would be. Another thought provoking topic is essentially the ending of a culture (in this case Samurai) due to the expansion of a global monoculture. What will the world be like in another 200 years?

Timeline

30 11 2003

I went to see Timeline at the Alexandria this weekend because a bunch of my friends were going and it seemed like a relaxing way to spend and evening. I had no particular interest in seeing the movie itself, I was just in a movie-going mood I guess. Well the movies was a terrible waste of film, butI guess I should have known considering it stars the blonde haired dude from The Fast and the Furious, Paul Walker. There was no imagination in this film and even a lobotomy patient could have guessed everythng that was going to happen 15 minutes in. Oh well, I guess you can’t win them all.
