Last Minute Road Trip!

30 08 2008

Rodney pitched the idea of going on a roadtrip this weekend while we sipped cold ones at Lucky 13 this past week. Well here we are on Saturday and we’re just an hour away from picking Mark up and heading out on the road to Seattle. We’re taking Rodney’s car which is a stick, so that means that only he and I will be driving it, but it was either that or take my new truck, which would have been fine, but a little less efficient and convenient. I plan to take a lot of pictures and make posts along the way so stay tuned…

What have I done?

14 08 2008

I have been thinking about replacing my Nissan 350Z with something that:

  • Has more room.
  • Can carry stuff for camping/backpacking.
  • Can carry or tow my motorcycle.

So the obvious choices were a small SUV or pickup truck. Yesterday I bought a 2007 Nissan Frontier that has a crew cab (4 doors) and is a 4×4. It’s not exactly a small truck, but it’s not big either. Somewhere right in the middle, which is nice. That being said, I do live in San Francisco, so space is at a premium. It’s a tight fit in my parking spot, and I’m already spilling out of it with the motorcycle. That’s really the only negative so far, though I’ve only owned it for a day. I need something to take my bike to the track in September, and I must do more backpacking this year or I will go crazy, so something had to be done.

The fuel usage will obviously be worse, though it reports 19 mpg so far, that is on my commute on the highway and just a little bit of city streets. It’s not as fun to drive as the Z, but it’s quite comfortable and these days I’m more interested in the driving to the fun rather than the driving as the fun. I’ll have pictures once my camera comes back from Canon (which is a topic for another post).

RIP Colin McCrae

17 09 2007

Mr. Thirsty sent me a link to this story this morning which details how Colin McCrae has passed away this weekend. Colin McCrae really has made rally racing a much more popular sport and may even be the only reason some people know about the motor sport at all.

Alternative Energy Sources

14 09 2005

It appears that some people have found alternative energy sources that not everyone is happy about. I say, if it’s cheaper than $3.00 a gallon it sounds good to me!

Traffic School

7 05 2005

I just got back from attending traffic school. This 8 hour session of intense study and deep exploration of the finer points of topics such as “not running into other people”and “what to do when you’ve pressed every pedal at once while facing the wrong direction in an eight way intersection” was just one part of my penalty for speeding a while ago.

I Can’t Drive… 55!

16 03 2005

55 motherfucker, can you drive it?

55 motherfucker, can you drive it?

Bah! I got nailed coming out of the Waldo Tunnel on my way to work today. The good news is that the cop was cool and wrote the ticket for 70mph. “You were never under 70, and at least once you were over 80. So I wrote the ticket for 70.” At least he didn’t tack on the fact that my registration, license, and insurance card all have my old address on them. How did I not see him? Oh well, time to go to San Francisco traffic school.

GTi Mac Mini Mod

14 03 2005

The Max Mini

The Max Mini

This story over at slashdot caught my eye the other day and I have been meaning to make a post about it since. I have been mulling over modifications for my own car; including everything from super chargers to just upgraded exhaust or wheels. I think the thing that is nice about using a Mac mini to mod your car is just how clean the mini is to begin with. The Z has a storage compartment right above the stereo unit that I have a feeling can just about perfectly house a Mini. Hmm… must resist.

Melbourne Grand Prix

8 03 2005

Although I couldn’t watch the race because comcast cable sucks and you have to have their digital package plus the sports package, I still managed to catch the results on the Formula One website. I am happy to see that a team other than Ferrari won for a change and that the rules changes for 2005 did not, aparently, destroy the excitement or spectacle of one of the most advanced sports on the planet.

Gran Turismo 4

27 02 2005

One of the most widely played franchises of the Sony Playstation and Playstation 2 reigns has been the Gran Turismo series. Just this past week, the fourth installment was released with what was, by comparison, very little fanfare. I think this was probably because it was delayed so many times, that press and marketing had a hard time drawing a bead in it. I picked up a copy even though I told myself I wouldn’t and so far I am enjoying it just like I have enjoyed past installments. There are 650 cars spanning at least a couple of decades of auto manufacturing. The opening movies shows the absolutely sweet Ford GT in all its glory. Go to Gran Turismo World – The official home of Gran Turismo for a look at some of the details. Looks like the rally modes in this version might be just a bit better than in GT3, and I love me some rally.

True Love

21 05 2004

So I purchased and picked up my brand new 2004 Nissan 350Z this week. It is the Touring model with 18″ wheels, 287hp V6, 6 speed manual transmission, Vehicle Dynamics Control, Traction Control System, carbon fiber reinforced drive shaft, 6-CD 9 speaker Bose stereo, LeMans Sunset orange exterior carbon leather interior, power seats, windows, locks, LoJack, and Xenon self levelling headlights.

I love the car. I drove it off the lot and back to work with a giant grin on my face the whole time. The sound, the power, the handling, the looks, I love it all! I really am glad to have gone through with it and feel I got a good deal. I’ll be taking and posting pictures shortly so stay tuned…

Here are the pics I’ve taken. I’m no photo journalist, so they’re not the best in the world, but I think they convey what’s necessary.
