DiRT

25 06 2007

I picked up Codemasters’ DiRT on Saturday on my way home from work. I loved their previous rally racing games and was sure this one wouldn’t disappoint. The XBox 360 version of the game looks absolutely gorgeous and is a blast to play. As reviewers mentioned, the game does have framerate problems, but it is mostly forgivable. The worst cases happen in races against multiple vehicles as the extra rendering necessary for those beautiful car, truck, and buggy models must really add up. The game is part simulation and part arcade as the driving model is quite forgiving/over the top but the courses can be very challenging at speed. Overall I am really glad I picked this one up because I just love rally.

Deftones At the Warfield

21 06 2007

I missed one of my favorite bands, the Deftones, last time they were in town. I tried to buy some tickets at the last minute from Craigslist, but everything was gone by the time I enquired about them. This time I managed to grab two tickets for their show at the Warfield. I fear they are balcony seats, but all the floor tickets must have been sold out. Oh well, I am just glad to be going to the show. I have never seen them in concert and have been listening to them since around 1996. I bought two tickets, in case someone I know wants to go. But I typically end up going to shows alone if they are even borderline metal shows.

Nine Inch Nails: Year Zero

21 06 2007

I bought this CD a little while ago and have been enjoying it quite a bit. I normally rip my CDs to mp3 right away and only ever use the actual CD in my car. Well since I lost my iPod i have brought some of my CDs to work to listen to. I never noticed until today that the Year Zero CD ink changes color with its temperature. It starts off as a black CD that just says “year zero” on it. When it has warmed up (presumably from playing in your CD player) to becomes white with black lettering and 01100101 binary number looking stuff all over it. Pretty cool!

iPhone Agents?

12 06 2007

Could Apple be sending secret agents out among the iPod and cell phone owning community?

Fact: I “lost” both my cell phone AND iPod last weekend.
Fact: Apple’s iPhone is a cell phone AND and iPod.

I have been reading about Helio’s Ocean a lot recently since Gizmodo has been covering the hell out of it. It’s a pretty cool gadget and even though I don’t really need any of its features, my gadget lust has been making me want it despite its heft price tag and monthly cost. I certainly don’t need the iPhone’s features enough to justify its gigantic pricetag, even though I don’t know what its monthly cost will end up being.

Crackdown

3 06 2007

I picked up a copy of Crackdown yesterday at Best Buy. I had played the demo a couple of months ago and through it was pretty cool at the time. I don’t think I would have picked it up normally but two things caused me to do so. I got a gift card to Best Buy, and they didn’t have Forza Motorsport 2 in stock. Rather than leave empty handed, I decided to go ahead and get Crackdown. This is pretty much exactly what stores want you to do, come in for something, and whether it is there or not, leave with at least something.

So far I have been enjoying it because with so much crazy shit going on, there are a lot of entertaining moments. I don’t find the driving model very good though. It is a little floaty and unresponsive though that could be because of my character’s relatively low driving skill so far.
